Life at JIS

Our Facilities
Japanese International School is housed in a dynamic, spacious campus close to the Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve in Tai Po. The building houses both the International and Japanese Sections within the same space, providing some superb facilities shared by both schools.

House System
At JIS, our House System promotes a sense of community, belonging, and school spirit. Students and staff are divided into three houses: Pegasus, Phoenix, and Dragon. House events include: Community/House Days, Sports Days, Swimming Gala, and other friendly challenges and community service projects. These events and activities encourage teamwork, leadership, and pride, helping to build a positive school culture.
Each year, P5 and P6 students can nominate themselves for the roles of House Captain or Vice Captain. After presenting speeches on how they will lead and inspire their peers, P3–P6 students vote for their House leaders. Captains and Vice Captains take on important responsibilities, motivating their Houses during house events.

Student Support and Well-Being
We believe that every student deserves the support and opportunities they need to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally at JIS. Our approach to student support and well-being is grounded in inclusivity, respect for diversity, and a commitment to ensuring that all students feel valued, heard, and understood.

Extracurricular Activities
At JIS, we believe very strongly in the role of extracurricular activities, and we encourage all students to get involved wherever they can. Our programme includes a wide range of options such as martial arts, dance, gymnastics, badminton, trampoline, soccer, and swimming, including an elite swimming team. These activities are a mixture of privately operated courses and those run by our in-house sports company, Sports International Services Ltd. Students are invited to join via newsletters and brochures shared with the school community at the beginning of each term, or the end of the previous term.

Beyond JIS
On September 1st, 2009, ICHK (International College Hong Kong) opened its doors to its first students. ICHK is a joint venture between Japanese International School, ICHK Primary (formerly Hong Lok Yuen Primary School International School), and Kingston International School to provide a quality secondary education for students and families who wish to continue the values and philosophy of a personalised, high-quality, community-based education within the North East New Territories of Hong Kong. It offers parents and students of JIS a guaranteed educational through-train from age 4 to age 18 years.
