Personal, Social and Physical Education (PSPE)

Personal, Social and Physical Education (PSPE) at JIS

At JIS, the well-being of our students is central to all that we do. Our PSPE programme reflects the holistic philosophy of the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), supporting the physical, emotional, and social development of every child. Through PSPE, we aim to empower students to understand themselves better, develop healthy relationships, and make informed, responsible choices about their well-being.

The PSPE curriculum at JIS is divided into three key strands:

  • Identity: Students explore who they are, what shapes their sense of self, and how they can nurture their physical and emotional health. They learn strategies to build self-awareness, resilience, and confidence.
  • Active Living: Through physical education and health-focused lessons, students develop motor skills, an understanding of body systems, and the importance of maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle.
  • Interactions: Students gain skills to establish and maintain positive relationships, communicate effectively, and resolve conflicts respectfully. They also examine how their actions impact others and their community.

Our PSPE programme is integrated into the school day and woven into the fabric of our Units of Inquiry. Wherever possible, the concepts of personal well-being, social responsibility, and physical fitness are explored through meaningful, real-life contexts.

To ensure every child feels supported, we emphasise:

  • Student Voice: Encouraging students to express themselves, reflect on their feelings, and contribute to the school community.
  • A Safe Environment: Creating a welcoming and inclusive space where students feel safe to take risks, make mistakes, and grow.
  • Mindfulness and Well-Being: Introducing practices such as mindfulness exercises and discussions about mental health to help students manage stress and develop positive habits for life.

Additionally, our PSPE curriculum is supported by our commitment to extracurricular activities, physical education, and whole-school well-being initiatives. Students learn that a balanced life—one that values physical health, emotional resilience, and social connections—is key to thriving in a complex, ever-changing world.
