Merging of the Japanese Schools in Hong Kong in April 2026
February 19, 2025
The Hong Kong Japanese School (HKJS) is committed to enhancing educational quality and improving the learning environment for students while ensuring the sustainability of the institution. To this end, the School Management Committee has resolved to implement the consolidation of HKJS (i.e. the Hong Kong campus) and Japanese International School (i.e. the Tai Po campus) by April 2026 as a primary policy initiative. The consolidation is expected to achieve better utilization of resources, promote unification at the Tai Po campus and create a more conducive learning environment.
The Global Class for the primary section has been conducted in the Happy Valley Campus since 2016. With the expansion of the primary section to the secondary section in the Tai Po Campus, the Global Class is planned to commence in April 2027, with preparations started in early 2025, and other relevant arrangement is underway, subject to the approval of the Education Bureau.
Currently, we are in close liaison with various bureaus and departments of the Hong Kong Government and have secured formal approval for the school consolidation plan following discussions with the Education Bureau. We remain dedicated to obtaining the necessary authorization for the operation of the secondary section in Tai Po. Updates will be disseminated through the school consolidation briefing sessions and the school’s official website in due course.
With regard to the educational offerings at the consolidated institution, discussions are actively ongoing under the leadership of the principal, with a view to fostering a more stimulating educational environment at the expansive Tai Po campus, which is advantageously located amidst natural surroundings.
We understand some parents may harbor concerns about the transition, and we wish to emphasize our readiness and commitment in fostering an enhanced educational environment in the long term. We would also like to thank all parents, teachers and staff for your continued support and trust in our school. We respectfully request your understanding and cooperation during this transitional period.
