Our Languages Programme

picture_015.jpgAs part of our commitment to an internationally minded education we offer both Mandarin and Japanese as a foreign language. Some of our students are also given extra assistance in developing their level of English within our ESL programme.

Mandarin:

Our Mandarin programme caters for both beginners and developing existing speakers. All students in P1 - P6, receive 4 lessons per week taught by a native speaking teacher. As well as being taught daily conversation, students are taught pinyin and character writing, leading to the writing of short texts or stories. Text books are used for advanced levels. Aspects of Chinese culture and festivals are also explored. A language support teacher is also present for most lessons to enable a closer match to students ability levels.

Japanese:

All students in P1 - P6, receive 4 lessons per week which are differentiated to meet the needs of a range of abilities. As with Mandarin, text books similar to those in Japanese government schools are used for advanced learners. A language support teacher is also present for most lessons to enable a closer match to students ability levels.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

For a proportion of our students we offer specialist support in ESL. These classes are aimed at allowing students to gain both confidence and ability in their use of English. Activities are linked to students class-based curriculum wherever possible, to reinforce concepts and vocabulary being taught. We aim to make sure all our students are confident users of all aspects of the English language.
